A tourist on a beach "inflates" an entire village. A passionate love develops, provoking jealousy, vengeance, and finally tragedy. In the end, a small nail reminds everyone of the artificiality of the world that has been created.
Directed By: Dusan Vukotic, written by: Rudolf Sremec, edited by: Tea Brunsmid, music by: Tomislav Simovic.
Quote from IMDB: However, when a new-generation of animators went to work for Hanna-Barbera and attempted to take their work "back to basics", they took artistic cues from UPA and other "artistic"/"iconic" work of the 1950's which influenced H-B. Hence, the influence of "Surogat" shows up in such recent work as "Two Stupid Dogs", "Dexter's Laboratory", "The Powerpuff Girls", and (the most self-consciously "artistic" of this group) "Samurai Jack".
Only ex Yugoslavian film (of any kind) which won an Academy Award. This one in 1961
